Within these walls, stories of healing and resilience echo. Here at Vivantes Humboldt-Klinikum, also known as Humboldt-Krankenhaus, we stand before a place of vital importance. The clinic has a rich history and continues to serve the community today.
Vivantes Humboldt-Klinikum started as a hospital in 1908. The hospital served the communities of Reinickendorf, Tegel, Wittenau and Rosenthal. Architects Mohr and Weidner designed the original buildings. They also handled the interior’s artistic design.
After World War II, French forces occupied the grounds. It then became a military hospital named Hôpital Militaire Louis Pasteur. In 1952, the area returned to the Reinickendorf district. It operated as a municipal hospital until 1985. The original site on Teichstraße now serves as a senior center.
Fast forward to January 1, 1997. The present sites merged but retained the name Krankenhaus Reinickendorf. Upon the formation of Vivantes GmbH, it became Vivantes Humboldt-Klinikum. The Am Nordgraben location has a helicopter landing pad. This allows direct access for the Christoph 31 rescue helicopter. Annually, the clinic treats around 65,000 patients, about 40,000 as outpatients.
In 2008, a new building was completed at Am Nordgraben. It houses the Clinic for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics. The architectural firm tönies + schröter + jansen designed it. This firm also designed the Humboldt-Klinikum’s “comfort clinic”. It opened in 2010. This clinic caters particularly to international patients.
The Vivantes Humboldt-Klinikum has eleven medical departments. It offers more than 600 beds. The departments include Anesthesia, Surgery and Obstetrics. Also included are Internal Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry and Radiology. There is also Trauma Surgery, Orthopedics and Urology.
Vivantes Humboldt-Klinikum also houses one of Vivantes’ two pharmacies. Called Apotheke Nord, it supplies medications. It provides them not only to this clinic. It also supplies Klinikum Spandau and Klinikum im Friedrichshain.
In January 2021, the clinic faced a significant challenge. The Reinickendorf Health Department quarantined the entire facility. Twenty cases of the B.1.1.7 Alpha variant of SARS-CoV-2 were detected. These were among staff and patients. It marked the first identified cluster of this new virus mutation in Germany.
