The Humble area’s charm lies in its unique history and the stories that unfold within its borders. As we stand here in front of the Humble Museum, we are greeted by a timeless structure reflecting a past rich in oil, timber, and the dreams of settlers. Humble, a name synonymous with oil, began its story in the late 19th century with Pleasant Smith Humble, affectionately called “Plez,” arriving near the San Jacinto River before the Civil War. Plez’s legacy includes a post office established in his home. The area became a commercial hub for lumber with a massive sawmill. Humble became a crossroads for transporting lumber, even having two hotels, two general stores, a church and a school. Humble was even the home of the Humble Oil and Refining Company, which later became Exxon, a company that propelled the city into the spotlight. The Humble Oil Field was the largest producing field in Texas, bringing immense prosperity to the area. Today, you can wander through the museum and witness the evolution of Humble, a town that has seen it all.
