Lost in the sprawling metropolis of Beijing, Hujialou whispers tales of forgotten royalty and a family’s legacy. Hujialou wasn’t always known by this name. It once held the somber title of Huanggufen, meaning “tomb of royal aunt”. The identity of this royal aunt remains shrouded in mystery. The whispers of her existence linger in the air, a ghostly reminder of Hujialou’s regal past. Towards the end of the Qing dynasty, the Hu family erected a grand structure, visible from miles around. This prominent building became the namesake of the area, transforming Huanggufen into Hujialou, “Building of the Hu family”. Hujialou subdistrict, nestled within Chaoyang District, stands as a testament to this transition. In 1956, the area became Xiaozhuang Subdistrict. It underwent numerous transformations, merging with Balizhuang Subdistrict and reorganizing into a commune. It even bore the name Dazhailu Subdistrict for a short period. By 1975, it had reclaimed its identity as Hujialou Subdistrict. Hujialou’s population in 2020 reached approximately 53,000 residents, a bustling community built on layers of history. Today, Hujialou encompasses eleven communities, each contributing to the vibrant tapestry of this dynamic subdistrict.
