Hughes Hall, Cambridge University’s oldest graduate college, stands before us, a testament to changing times and unwavering ambition. Hughes Hall isn’t your typical Cambridge college. Founded in 1885 as the Cambridge Training College for Women, its initial purpose was to train women graduates for the teaching profession. The college’s first principal, Elizabeth Phillips Hughes, led the charge from a small house called Crofton Cottage in Newnham with just fourteen students. Imagine those early days, filled with the fervent hope of breaking barriers in education.

Hughes Hall quickly outgrew Crofton Cottage. In 1895, it moved to its current location, a purpose-built structure overlooking Fenner’s cricket ground. The main building, now called the Wileman Building, is a blend of 19th and 20th-century architecture. It houses student rooms, the college library, and various administrative offices. As the role of women in education evolved, so did Hughes Hall. In 1949, it became a recognized institution of Cambridge University, renamed in honor of its founding principal. A significant milestone arrived in 1973 when Hughes Hall became the first all-female college at Cambridge to admit men.

Today, Hughes Hall embraces a diverse student body, representing over 60 nationalities. The college welcomes both postgraduate and mature undergraduate students, fostering a unique blend of experience and academic pursuits. Students at Hughes Hall don’t just study; they live.
