Remarkable isn’t it? This grand building before us is the Hüfferstiftung. It stands as a testament to Münster’s rich history. More than just a building it’s a living chronicle.
The Hüfferstiftung wasn’t always a university building. For over eighty years it served a very different purpose. It was a pioneering orthopedic clinic. Founded in 1893 by Wilhelm Hüffer it offered healing to those in need. Many couldn’t afford treatment elsewhere. Hüffer’s generosity ensured care was accessible to all regardless of wealth.
The clinic’s origins are humble. It began in 1889 in a building on Bergstraße. It was a small space only fitting 15 to 18 patients. Amazingly in its first five years it treated around 800 patients. More than half were successfully cured. The success however highlighted a need for a larger facility.
Wilhelm Hüffer’s nephew proposed a new building in 1898. Construction began in 1899 on a plot south of the Schlossgarten. The architect Alexander Cazin designed the stunning building. The foundation stone was laid on May 5 1902 the founder’s death anniversary. The new Hüfferstiftung opened just 19 months later.
It was a marvel of its time. It boasted modern medical equipment elevators and spacious gardens. The clinic could now accommodate approximately 160 patients. One unusual feature was its biberschwanzdach a type of roof uncommon in northern and western Germany.
The Hüfferstiftung continued as an orthopedic clinic even after it was transferred to the city of Münster in 1922. Further expansion followed until 1983 when a new central clinic opened. The orthopedic clinic moved there in 1984. The Hüfferstiftung was then repurposed for Münster’s universities.
Today the Hüfferstiftung houses various university departments. It’s currently undergoing extensive renovations. It will become a key part of a new university campus. This building is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of compassion innovation and Münster’s enduring spirit. It represents a constant evolution a transformation from healing bodies to nurturing minds. The Hüfferstiftung’s legacy continues to shape Münster’s future.
