Huangluo Yao Village has earned the title of the “World’s First Long Hair Village.” It has been home to the Huangluo Yao people for hundreds of years. They reside in the Longji Rice Terraces. The village boasts a population of around 600 residents. Among them, about 60 women have exceptionally long hair.
The women of Huangluo Yao Village are known for their red embroidered dresses and their hair. Their hair often exceeds 1 meter in length. The village was even listed in the Guinness World Records as “the village with the world’s longest hair”. In 2004, Xie Qiuping’s hair reached a staggering 5.627 meters.
For Yao women, long hair is more than just a physical attribute. It symbolizes prosperity, longevity, wealth, and good luck. They believe that their hair should grow as long as possible. It is a cherished possession passed down through generations.
Yao women only cut their hair once in their lives. This happens at the age of 18. This symbolizes a new beginning. The cut hair is carefully kept by the woman’s grandmother. It is returned to her when she marries. On her wedding day, she combines the cut hair with her existing hair.
Their secret to shiny, healthy hair involves using rice water and tea seeds. This ancient custom has been passed down. Fermented rice water is rich in vitamin B. This promotes hair growth. They also maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating natural fruits and vegetables.
