Lost in Guangzhou’s Liwan District? Here before us stands Hualinsi Buddhist Temple. It is a sanctuary steeped in history.
Hualinsi Temple’s story began long ago. Over 1400 years ago, it emerged as a cradle of Buddhism in China. Legend says Dharma journeyed across the Indian Sea and Pacific Ocean. He sought to spread his missionary work in China. Arriving in Guangzhou, he established Hualinsi Temple. This marked a pivotal moment in cultural exchange between China and India.
Originally, the temple bore the name Xilai Temple. Xilai translates to “visitor from the west”. This name honored Dharma’s arrival from distant lands. The temple’s origins trace back to before the Sui Dynasty. It sat on the banks of the Pearl River. Emperor Liangwu of the Southern Dynasty reigned in 526 CE. The esteemed Indian monk Bodhidharma reached China. He founded Xilaiyan at this very landing site. Bodhidharma is revered as the founder of Zen Buddhism in China.
Centuries later, in 1654, Hualinsi Temple underwent significant expansion. It was then renamed Hualinsi Temple. Hualinsi became one of Guangzhou’s five largest Buddhist temples. A large community of monks called it home.
Two stone lions and drums stand guard at the entrance. Above the door, Chinese characters declare “Hualin Chan Temple”. A couplet adorns the stone pillars on each side. Entering Hualinsi Temple, stone pagodas grace both ends. To the south, a row of bungalows houses the Gongde Hall. Beside it stands the Dharma Hall.
The Dharma Hall was reconstructed in the 1990s. It commemorates Dharma’s legacy. The hall faces northward. A wooden couplet adorns the stone pillars. It praises Dharma’s contribution. He introduced Buddhism to China. A statue of Dharma rests on a white stone base. It is in the center of the northern wall. Curved pictures depicting Dharma’s legend hang on the eastern and western walls.
Hualinsi Temple lacks a Daxiongbaodian Hall. The Five-Hundred-Arhat Hall serves as the main hall instead. It was built in the last year of Emperor Daoguang’s reign. This was between 1821 and 1861. The Arhat statues are lifelike. They show different postures and moods. A statue of Marco Polo stands among them. He was the Italian explorer who visited China in the thirteenth century.
Today, Hualinsi Temple stands near Hualin Jade Street. Inside the temple grounds, visitors find star rock towers. They also find bungalows housing the Hall of Merit. The First Patriarch Bodhidharma Hall contains a full-length statue of Bodhidharma. The statue was moved to the hall in 1997. This further solidified the temple’s dedication to the venerated monk.
Take a moment to appreciate the serene atmosphere. Hualinsi Temple provides a place of peace. It offers a glimpse into China’s rich Buddhist heritage. Consider the journey of Dharma. Think about the temple’s evolution through centuries. Hualinsi Temple remains a testament to cultural exchange.
