Gaze upon these majestic Huabiao. These aren’t just decorative columns. They are silent witnesses to centuries of Chinese history.

The Huabiao are ceremonial columns. They stand proudly in front of palaces and tombs. Their imposing presence has made them symbols of Chinese culture. These particular Huabiao are made of white marble. They are exquisite. Each is composed of four parts. A square base decorated with dragons and lotuses supports the column. The column itself is adorned with a coiled dragon and auspicious clouds. A horizontal cloud-shaped stone board crosses the column near the top. Finally a round cap called a chenglupan sits atop the column. This cap collects the dew. A mythical creature called a denglong perches on the very top. Legend says it communicates the people’s mood to Heaven.

The story of the Huabiao begins long ago. Some say they evolved from ancient tribal totem poles. Others trace them back to the legendary leader Shun in the 23rd-22nd century BC. Early Huabiao were wooden boards called bangmu. People could write criticisms of the government on these boards. The king moved the bangmu in front of the palace to control criticism. Under King Li of Zhou those criticizing the government were killed. This ended the bangmu’s practical use.

During the Han dynasty the bangmu became a symbol. It represented the government’s responsibility to the people. Huabiao were erected near bridges palaces city gates and tombs. The Southern and Northern Dynasties saw a revival. Boxes were placed beside the Huabiao. People could write their grievances. But the Huabiao itself was no longer a bulletin board.

Spirit roads often used ornate que towers. But the Huabiao replaced them. You can see that in the design and placement of these magnificent structures. The Huabiao before you are not just stone. They are vessels of history. They are reminders of the relationship between the ruler and the ruled. They stand as powerful symbols of Chinese history and culture. Their silent vigil continues. They are a testament to the enduring spirit of China.
