It’s a time capsule, a veteran of service, and a symbol of royal voyages. Launched in 1936 from a shipyard in Japan, the HTMS Maeklong diligently served the Royal Thai Navy for almost six decades. She played many roles throughout her lifetime, from training naval officers to safeguarding the Gulf of Thailand during World War II. The HTMS Maeklong even served as a royal vessel on several occasions. Imagine the young King Rama VIII gracing her decks, embarking on a journey to Switzerland for his studies. Picture the solemn procession as she carried the ashes of King Prajadhipok back to Thai soil. The HTMS Maeklong bore witness to history, carrying the weight of duty and the grace of royalty.
