Is it possible for a place to hold centuries of history and still be a place of celebration? Here at Hozori Park, right in the heart of Kabul, the answer is a resounding yes. This isn’t just a green space. Hozori Park is a mirror reflecting Kabul’s past and present. The park sits serenely at the foot of Tepe Maranjan hill, its edges caressed by the Kabul River. Look north, and you’ll spot the Ghazi Stadium. Today, Hozori Park is a gathering place, a spot for celebrations and parades. But its story goes much deeper. Imagine this park almost a century ago, during the reign of Amir Habibullah. The peaceful green expanse you see transformed into a golfer’s paradise. Then, picture it again in 1956. The world had changed, and Afghanistan found itself at the crossroads of the Cold War. The US and the Soviet Union chose this very park for their “Jeshyn” exhibitions, each eager to showcase their technological prowess. A symbol of American ingenuity, a geodesic dome designed by R. Buckminster Fuller himself, arose right here, assembled in mere days by skilled Afghan workers. This park holds secrets, whispers of a time long past. In 1933, during a seemingly ordinary construction project, an ancient pot was unearthed, filled with jewelry and nearly 1,000 coins. These weren’t just any coins. They were relics of the Achaemenid Empire, dating back to a time when this land was part of a vast empire stretching from Greece to India. The Chaman Hozori hoard, as it came to be known, whispered tales of ancient trade routes and cultural exchange. The discovery sent ripples through the world of history and archaeology. One coin, a humble imitation of an Athenian tetradrachm, became a key. It allowed experts to date the entire hoard to around 380 BCE, proving that this land had a thriving economy centuries before. Sadly, the echoes of history are sometimes silenced. During the turmoil of the Afghan civil war, the hoard disappeared from the Kabul Museum. Only 14 coins resurfaced years later, a poignant reminder of the fragility of the past. Hozori Park stands today as a testament to Kabul’s enduring spirit. It’s a place where history whispers from the ground, where celebrations fill the air, and where the echoes of laughter and life resonate through the ages.
