“Is it true that a moss-covered statue grants wishes?” a young woman whispered, her eyes fixed on the curious figure before her. We stand here, before Hōzen-ji in Osaka’s bustling Dotonbori district. Hōzen-ji, a temple seemingly untouched by time, offers a glimpse into a bygone era. Founded in 1637, Hōzen-ji was once a haven for actors and artists. It thrived amidst a vibrant entertainment district. Theaters and performance venues surrounded the temple. Shows were regularly held within its grounds, under colorful tents. Tragedy struck during the bombings of 1945. Hōzen-ji was almost entirely destroyed. Only a single statue survived, the very statue before us now. This is Fudō Myōō, a wrathful protector deity. He’s covered entirely in a thick layer of moss. This unusual appearance stems from a long-held tradition. People pour water over the statue, known as “Mizukake Fudo,” believing it brings good luck. Over time, the constant moisture has fostered the growth of moss, transforming Fudō Myōō into a captivating, almost mystical figure. Even today, amidst the modern cityscape, people continue this ritual. They visit Hōzen-ji to offer their prayers and splash water onto the moss-covered deity. They hope for good fortune, a connection to the past, and perhaps a moment of tranquility in the heart of Osaka. Hōzen-ji stands as a testament to resilience and the enduring power of belief. It is a sanctuary where the whispers of history mingle with the hopes of the present.
