Envision a space alive with laughter. The Hoyt Sullivan Playground stands as a testament to community collaboration and innovative design. This urban oasis in Somerville, Massachusetts, offers a world of adventure for children of all ages and abilities.

Hoyt Sullivan Playground underwent a significant renovation completed in 2017. The community’s voice shaped the playground into a natural play space.

Notice the playground’s design. Klopfer Martin Design Group’s integrated site design earned a Merit Award from the Boston Society of Landscape Architects in 2019. The goal was to provide improved security and safety. A healthier tree canopy was also a priority. The design incorporates natural materials to promote healthy exploratory play.

The Hoyt Sullivan Playground features several multi-level play elements. An accessible tower and a log jam inspire children. The most adventurous explorers can climb the log jam to a height of seven feet.

The custom playground tower offers unique views. Children can track the trains as they pass by. A smaller slide from the first level is there. A higher nine-foot slide challenges those who want to access the second level. The playground facilitates imaginative play. It allows children of varying ages and abilities to play and explore.

The renovations included other new features. There is better lighting and improved visibility. Basketball hoops are available for children and adults. A new deck surrounds the beech tree. A cafe space has tables and chairs. An ADA-accessible circulation and scootering path traverses new slopes and elevations. There is an interactive sand and water play area. Monkey bars, natural log play features, and new swings round out the attractions.

Aqueous designed the irrigation system, drinking fountain, and water play device. They provided construction drawings and assisted in permitting. They also provided construction administration.

To reach Hoyt Sullivan Playground, street parking is available nearby. You can also take the 80 bus.

Hoyt Sullivan Playground is more than just a playground. It is a place where children’s imaginations can run wild. The climbing structures offer challenges. The sandbox invites creativity. The cycle track or ‘The Speedway’ allows kids to ride bikes or scooters. Hoyt Sullivan Playground is a space where memories are made.
