What whispers echo across the Hooghly River, carried on the breeze from the bustling heart of Howrah? Howrah, a city steeped in history, stands as a testament to time and transformation. Here, on the western bank of the Hooghly, opposite its vibrant twin, Kolkata, Howrah has witnessed the ebb and flow of empires and the rise of industry. Howrah’s roots trace back over 500 years. But the region itself holds echoes of the ancient Bengali kingdom of Bhurshut. Venetian explorer Cesare Federici, in his journals from the late 16th century, documented a bustling port called “Buttor,” likely the present-day Bator neighborhood within Howrah. This historical landmark finds mention even earlier, in a 1495 Bengali poem. In 1713, the British East India Company sought to acquire five villages, including Howrah itself. Their efforts fell short, and Howrah remained independent. By 1728, Howrah became a part of the larger zamindaris of Burdwan or Muhammand Aminpur. However, the tides of history shifted. Following the Battle of Plassey in 1760, the East India Company formally gained control of the Howrah district. Howrah’s identity is intricately woven with the clang of machinery and the hiss of steam. Known as the “Sheffield of the East,” Howrah became a hub of engineering prowess. From shipbuilders in the early 19th century to the heavy industries that followed, Howrah played a pivotal role in India’s industrial revolution. The Burn Standard Company, a giant in heavy engineering, established its oldest manufacturing unit here. Howrah also boasts the first large-scale paint manufacturing plant in Southeast Asia, Shalimar Paints, founded in 1902. Howrah is not merely a city of steel and steam; it is a city of connections. Howrah Station, a colossal railway terminus, is a gateway to India, connecting Howrah and Kolkata to the nation’s vast network. Within Howrah itself, twelve smaller stations, including the prominent Santragachi and Shalimar, further enhance its connectivity. Howrah’s story continues to unfold.
