Howrah Goods Yard, an integral part of this historic city, has played a vital role in its development. The Howrah Goods Yard wasn’t always the bustling hub we see today. Before the arrival of European traders, its history remains shrouded in mystery. It likely belonged to the Tamralipti kingdom until the 7th century. Then, it passed into the hands of the Rarh kings. The Venetian explorer Cesare Federici first mentioned a trading center near present-day Shibpur in 1578. This place, known as Betor, became a crucial point for ships unable to navigate further up the Hooghly River. This burgeoning trade, initially controlled by the Portuguese, attracted the Dutch, English, and French. This led to increased cultivation, settlements of artisans, and unfortunately, the attention of pirates. Howrah’s story is intertwined with the East Indian Railway. Howrah became the terminus of the first railway line in India. The line, opened in 1854, connected Howrah to the coalfields of Bardhaman. This development significantly impacted the growth of Howrah Goods Yard, transforming it into a crucial freight hub. The Howrah Railway Terminus, opened in 1854, further solidified Howrah’s position as a major transportation center. It attracted laborers and professionals from across India. Howrah Goods Yard, with its constant flow of goods, became a vital part of this expanding economy. The district’s focus shifted from agriculture to industry during the 19th century. By 1908, Howrah boasted at least 56 factories. The industrial boom continued through World War II. After the partition of India, the jute industry declined. However, Howrah reinvented itself as an engineering center. Howrah Goods Yard remains a testament to the city’s industrial spirit.
