The Houston Heights, a true gem in the city of Houston, holds within its heart a history that is as intriguing as it is fascinating. Imagine yourself standing at the very spot where this vibrant community began to take root, a place where dreams were nurtured and the heart of Houston’s history truly began to beat.

In the late 19th century, Houston Heights had a vision. This early planned community, one of the first in Texas, sought to create a place where people could live comfortably, work, and enjoy a lifestyle different from the densely populated city. It was a place where the heart of the city could find solace and inspiration, a place where families could grow and thrive.

This vision was brought to life by a visionary banker, Oscar Martin Carter. In 1886, he partnered with investors to establish the Omaha & South Texas Land Company, a venture dedicated to transforming 1,756 acres of Texan land into a thriving suburb. They built streets, parks, schools, and established utility systems to create a modern-day utopia. They even built a hotel on West 19th Street, attracting an even greater influx of early residents.

The Heights was also a place where history was made. In 1912, it passed a prohibition on alcohol which continued even after the nationwide repeal of Prohibition. The City of Houston Heights, as it was then known, was the heart of this movement, and it continues to be a community with its own distinct identity. For most of the 20th century, the Houston Heights saw its fortunes rise and fall. After WWII, its glamour faded as Houston residents opted for space and mobility rather than the charm of the historic Heights. This led to a decline in home values and a transformation of the neighborhood.

But in 1973, the community rallied. The Houston Heights Association was formed to promote revitalization and to preserve the neighborhood’s irreplaceable history. This vision was embraced by Houston itself and it has resulted in an area that is now a thriving, modern-day, historic community. The Houston Heights, with its architectural gems and vibrant culture, is a testament to the enduring power of vision and the resilience of the human spirit. As you stroll deeper into its heart, you’ll discover a rich tapestry of stories that make this one of the most fascinating and beloved areas in Houston.
