The City of Houston Heights, as it was then known, was the heart of this movement, and it continues to be a community with its own distinct identity. For most of the 20th century, the Houston Heights saw its fortunes rise and fall. After WWII, its glamour faded as Houston residents opted for space and mobility rather than the charm of the historic Heights. This led to a decline in home values and a transformation of the neighborhood.
But in 1973, the community rallied. The Houston Heights Association was formed to promote revitalization and to preserve the neighborhood’s irreplaceable history. This vision was embraced by Houston itself and it has resulted in an area that is now a thriving, modern-day, historic community.
