Did you know that Houston Academy for International Studies HAIS boasts a 100% four-year graduation rate? That’s right a perfect score. We’re standing right in front of this remarkable school. It’s located in Midtown Houston on the Houston Community College System’s Central College campus.
HAIS opened its doors in August 2006. It was designed to be a small program. Initially only 100 ninth graders attended. The school aimed to prepare students not just for university but for their roles as global citizens. Think about that for a moment. Global citizens. It’s a bold goal and one that HAIS actively pursues.
The school’s principal Melissa Jacobs-Thibaut has a truly impressive background. She worked for the United States Peace Corps in Cape Verde and Mozambique. That experience clearly shaped her approach to education. She brings a unique perspective to her role. She understands global interconnectedness firsthand. This informs her leadership style and the school’s mission.
HAIS students aren’t just confined to the classroom. They are encouraged to travel the world. Students have visited Germany Australia New Zealand China Brazil Malaysia and South Africa. Some even participate in Model United Nations. These experiences extend beyond mere sightseeing. The students hone language skills learn about different cultures and develop empathy. They are learning to navigate our world. The world of the 21st century.
Getting into HAIS is competitive. Students must submit applications. There is a lottery system. However the school serves a diverse student body. In 2022 93.4% of students were racial and ethnic minorities. 68% were low-income students. HAIS shows that academic excellence is possible for all students. Regardless of their economic background.
The curriculum is challenging. Students must complete two service-learning projects four years of foreign language study and the Texas Scholars program requirements. Many graduate with college credit. They complete a 180-hour internationally focused internship. They’re leaving high school already well-prepared for college and careers.
HAIS is more than just a school. It’s a community. It’s a springboard. It launches students into a future as informed global citizens. It is a shining example of what is possible. A testament to the power of education. A place where dreams take flight. Right here in Midtown Houston. It’s the embodiment of their mission.
