Was the House of the Turkish Sultana truly fit for royalty? Here at Fatehpur Sikri, before the jewel-casket-like structure, that question hangs in the air. The House of the Turkish Sultana, also known as Hujra-i-Anup Talao, is a small, exquisitely carved building near Anup Talao. Some believe it housed two of Akbar’s Turkish queens, Salima Sultan Begum and Ruqayya Begum. However, its diminutive size casts doubt on its role as a residential building. It’s more likely it served as a pleasure pavilion connected to the pond, a place for the queens to relax and enjoy the serene surroundings. The House of the Turkish Sultana is a masterpiece of intricate carvings. Each stone slab boasts a unique design, from arabesque patterns on the verandah pillars to bell-shaped, floral, and herringbone carvings on the roof brackets. The dado panels, depicting scenes of forests and gardens, complete with animal motifs and swastik patterns, add to the building’s charm. This “superb jewel casket,” as it’s often called, is connected to the Khwabgah complex by a colonnaded verandah. A portico on the west side, both adorned with latticed stone screens, adds to the building’s aesthetic appeal. The House of the Turkish Sultana is a testament to the Mughal artistry and a captivating enigma amidst the grandeur of Fatehpur Sikri. It leaves us pondering its true purpose and the stories it could tell.
