“She who loves art” The inscription above the door of the Hu00f4tel Goblet d’Alviella whispers a promise. A promise of beauty a promise of history. This isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in stone and sgraffito.

Before you stands the Hu00f4tel Goblet d’Alviella a stunning example of Neo-Renaissance architecture. Completed in 1882 it was the brainchild of Octave van Rysselberghe. This was his first major project. Van Rysselberghe himself lived here until 1888. Then Count Eugu00e8ne Goblet d’Alviella moved in. The Count was a fascinating man a professor a liberal member of parliament and a Freemason.

Notice the sgraffito. This decorative technique was a first for Brussels on such a grand scale. Sculptor Julien Dillens designed them. Architect Jean Baes executed the designs. Look closely. You’ll see Triton and a siren surrounded by dolphins and putti. There’s an allegory of architecture too a figure with a plumb line and foot resting on an Ionic column. And that central medallion? That’s Minerva.

The Hu00f4tel Goblet d’Alviella is more than just a pretty face. It represents a time when Brussels was embracing new styles. It tells of a count who valued art and learning. It showcases the talent of a young architect who would go on to greater things. It’s a testament to the enduring power of creativity.

The building now houses a private school. Children walk the halls where a count once lived. They study in rooms adorned with centuries-old artistry. The history continues. The story continues.

Walk along the Rue Faider. Feel the weight of history beneath your feet. Imagine the elegant gatherings the intellectual debates that once filled this building. The Hu00f4tel Goblet d’Alviella is a silent witness to the passage of time. It stands as a symbol of artistic achievement. A legacy of Belgian culture. A place where history and art intertwine.
