Is it possible for a former private chateau to become a town hall? The Hôtel de Ville de Carvin proves it is. This building embodies Carvin’s history. It serves as the heart of the community. Let’s explore its story.

The Hôtel de Ville de Carvin wasn’t always a town hall. It began as the private chateau of a local brewer named Delehelle. In 1930, the town of Carvin purchased the chateau. Carvin needed a new town hall.

Architect Emile Benoît was tasked with designing the new Hôtel de Ville de Carvin. He created the plans in 1930. The building has two stories built with brick and stone. The central pavilion features a triangular fronton. A bell tower from the old alderman’s house built in 1788 sits atop.

The interior decoration of the Hôtel de Ville de Carvin is by the painter Moïse Massy. He created two stained-glass windows. They depict miners leaving the mine and the harvest. Massy also painted a portrait of Jean Jaurès. He also included the city’s coat of arms and allegorical subjects. These represent liberty and equality.

The grounds around the Hôtel de Ville de Carvin were also redesigned. Landscape architect Georges Van Den Heede was commissioned in 1931. He transformed the area into a beautiful park. It offers a pleasant green space for the community.

Two imposing Atlantes stand guard at the entrance. Do not miss them. They are impressive figures.

The Hôtel de Ville de Carvin is more than just a pretty building. It also symbolizes Carvin’s identity. The stained-glass windows showcase the town’s past. They feature agriculture and mining. These were the cornerstones of Carvin’s economy.

The Hôtel de Ville de Carvin is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. This recognizes its importance to the region’s mining heritage. It also became a listed historical monument in 2009. This protects its architectural and artistic elements.

Key features of the Hôtel de Ville de Carvin are protected. This includes the facades and roofs. Also protected is the decor in the ground floor vestibule. The grand staircase with its stained-glass window and railing are too. The great council chamber is also secured. So is Massy’s painting on the first floor. Finally the entry gate, the fences, and the park are also protected.

Today, the Hôtel de Ville de Carvin continues to serve as the town hall. It is a place where local government operates. It’s a place where important decisions are made. The Hôtel de Ville de Carvin is a living monument to Carvin’s history. It is a testament to its people’s resilience. Take a moment to appreciate this building. Think about the stories it holds within its walls.
