Hidden in plain sight, the Hôtel de Brouckère whispers stories of a time when Art Nouveau blossomed in Brussels. This elegant town house, nestled on the corner of Rue Jacques Jordaens and Rue De Crayer, stands as a testament to the creative spirit of the late 19th century. The Hôtel de Brouckère isn’t as flamboyant as some of its Art Nouveau neighbors. Yet, its quiet elegance and subtle details capture the essence of the movement. Built in 1898 for Florence de Brouckère, this house was designed by the renowned architect Octave van Rysselberghe, in collaboration with Henry van de Velde. Florence, a widow and the mother-in-law of Louis de Brouckère, a prominent socialist, sought to create a unique learning environment for her young son, Léon. This home, the Hôtel de Brouckère, became the setting for “l’école des petites études,” a private school with an impressive roster of teachers. Among them was the anarchist geographer Élisée Reclus, a close friend of Florence. Reclus introduced her to the world of van de Velde, sparking the collaboration that resulted in this architectural gem. The golden freestone facade of the Hôtel de Brouckère, punctuated by elegantly designed low arches and rectangular windows, exudes a quiet sophistication. Look closely and you’ll notice the subtle Japanese motifs adorning the balcony on Rue De Crayer. This detail hints at the global influences that permeated Art Nouveau design. Step into the courtyard and you’ll discover a hidden world of contrasting colors. The side facade, a harmonious blend of white stone and red brick, offers a different perspective on van Rysselberghe’s vision. The original metal gate and the delicate ironwork of the enclosing wall add to the charm. While the interior has undergone some changes over the years, the essence of the original design remains. The heart of the Hôtel de Brouckère is its grand polygonal hall, illuminated by a stained-glass skylight. This space, once the central hub of the house, served as both a living area and a classroom for Léon and his classmates. Though much of the original furniture designed by van de Velde is gone, the oak parquet floors and the elegant wooden staircase offer a glimpse into the past. The Hôtel de Brouckère now houses the Representation of the German-speaking Community. It stands as a reminder of Brussels’ rich history, a place where architecture, education, and social activism intertwined in the vibrant atmosphere of the Belle Époque.
