What if this green space whispered tales of soldiers and forgotten monuments? This is the Hospitaler Bastion. It stands as a testament to Stralsund’s layered past.

The Hospitaler Bastion, once a military training ground, has transformed. Around 1885, it was redesigned into a green space by Ferdinand Jühlke. His vision gave us the park we see today. But this place holds more than just pretty landscaping.

Let’s journey back to 1648. Sweden gained control. Stralsund’s defenses expanded. Fourteen bastions formed a protective ring. The Hospitaler Bastion played its part in this system.

Now, picture Prussian soldiers drilling here. Before its park transformation, this bastion echoed with military exercises. This bastion served as Exerzierplatz. The soldiers practiced here.

Later, a war memorial stood here. Inaugurated in 1886, it honored Stralsunders who fell in the Prussian-German wars of 1864, 1866 and 1870/71. Imagine the somber gatherings, paying tribute to the fallen. The Kriegerdenkmal was a place to remember them.

But the memorial is no more. It was removed in the 1950s. Today, only memories remain.

In 1873, Stralsund began dismantling its fortifications. A treaty in 1879 formalized the handover of military properties from Prussia to the city. This included bastions, city walls, ponds, bridges and some houses. This act paved the way for the green transformation of the Hospitaler Bastion and other areas.

The Hospitaler Bastion has transformed over time. It went from a military bastion to an exercise space, a memorial site to a park. Each layer adds to its unique story.

So, as you wander through this green space, remember its past. The Hospitaler Bastion connects us to Stralsund’s military history. It reminds us of the city’s evolution.
