In 1970, a beacon of hope emerged in Villa de Vallecas, Madrid. This beacon was the Hospital Virgen de la Torre, initially a private clinic specializing in surgery and maternity care. The hospital’s original name, “Sanatorio Médico-Quirúrgico Virgen de la Torre, S.A.” reflects its initial private status. However, its destiny shifted in 1972. The Spanish National Institute of Social Security acquired the Hospital Virgen de la Torre, transitioning it into public service. This marked a significant turning point, solidifying its role in serving the community. In 2002, the Hospital Virgen de la Torre joined the Madrid public health network. It remained under the Area 1 of Specialized Care until December 2010 when it became part of the Unified Area. A major change occurred in 2007. The management of Hospital Virgen de la Torre, including its affiliated centers, was entrusted to the nearby Hospital Universitario Infanta Leonor. This administrative shift further integrated the hospital into the local healthcare system. Hospital Virgen de la Torre then focused on short and medium-stay medical support. This strategic reorientation allowed the hospital to specialize in chronic and advanced illnesses, working closely with the Infanta Leonor Hospital and primary care services. Hospital Virgen de la Torre continued to evolve. In 2017, it legally merged with the Hospital Universitario Infanta Leonor, solidifying its role within the larger healthcare system. Although the Hospital Virgen de la Torre doesn’t have its own emergency room today, its legacy of service continues under the umbrella of the Infanta Leonor Hospital.
