Doesn’t it strike you as remarkable how a building can embody the spirit of a community? Here before us stands the Hospital Masjid. It is more than just a place of worship. It is a testament to the enduring faith and cultural heritage of Muslims in Mauritius.

The story of the Hospital Masjid begins in the 1850s. At this time Mauritius was under British rule. Muslim merchants recognized the need for a dedicated space for prayer and community gathering. Initially a simple house served as a temporary mosque. This humble beginning marked the first step in creating what would become a significant landmark.

In 1852, a group of visionary merchants purchased properties in Queen Street. They acted on behalf of the entire Muslim community. Their aim was to establish a proper mosque. This marked a pivotal moment. Haji Joonus Allarakia, Casseem Hemeem, and others pooled their resources. They ensured the community’s spiritual needs were met.

The original mosque was built in 1853. It was a modest structure known as the Mosquée des Arabes. This translates to the Mosque of the Arabs. This name arose because the founders were mistakenly identified as Arabs by the public. Despite its small size this mosque quickly became the heart of the Muslim community.

As the Muslim population in Port Louis grew the Mosquée des Arabes became too small. Between 1857 and 1877, surrounding properties were acquired. Generous Muslim traders donated these to expand the mosque. This expansion reflected the community’s increasing needs and their commitment to their faith.

The expansion project began in 1878. Jackaria Jan Mahomed oversaw it. Artisans and materials came from India. Unfortunately disease and shortages delayed the project. Finally in 1895 the expanded Jummah Masjid was completed.

Today the Hospital Masjid stands as an architectural marvel. It blends Indian, Creole, and Islamic styles. Moorish and Mughal influences are also visible. The original Mosquée des Arabes has been integrated into the larger structure. It now serves as the main prayer hall.

Inside the Jummah Masjid you will find beautiful glass chandeliers. They illuminate the prayer hall. Outside in the courtyard stands an ancient Indian almond tree. This tree was already present when the land was purchased in 1852. It serves as a living witness to the mosque’s history.

The Hospital Masjid is more than just a beautiful building. It is a vibrant center for Islamic life in Mauritius. Islamic wedding ceremonies are performed here. Daily prayers are held and Islamic education is provided. The mosque also hosts special events such as Friday communal prayers and Eid prayers.

The Hospital Masjid also houses the remains of Jamal Shah. He was a pir or Muslim saint from Kutch, India. His marble tomb is located next to the mosque. It attracts visitors who come to pay their respects.

Visiting the Hospital Masjid offers a unique glimpse into the history of Islam in Mauritius. Please show respect by dressing modestly. Also adhere to any onsite signs or instructions. Remember that Masjid is an Arabic word. It simply means mosque or a place of worship for Muslims.

The Hospital Masjid stands as a symbol. It shows the faith, zeal, and selflessness of the early Muslim pioneers. They believed that no community could thrive without religion. Also that no person could thrive without prayer. As we leave this sacred place let us carry with us a sense of its rich heritage.
