“A bridge between two worlds,” a young boy whispered, pointing at the Hörder Brücke. He wasn’t wrong. The Hörder Brücke in Dortmund doesn’t just span railway tracks and a road. It connects the bustling northern part of Hörde’s city center with the southern districts. This pedestrian bridge, officially named Hörder Brücke, but sometimes called Hörder Bahnhofsbrücke, stands as a testament to Hörde’s evolving history. The original Hörder Brücke arose in 1903. Imagine the clatter of hooves and wheels as horse-drawn carriages tried to navigate the busy railway crossing. The railway barriers would block traffic an astounding 167 times a day. The solution? A magnificent iron truss bridge. Built by Dortmund’s own August Klönne steel company, it cost 140,000 Goldmark. It stretched 75.6 meters long and 12 meters wide. The bridge was inaugurated on October 17, 1903. This iron giant even carried trams across its span. Fast forward to 1959. A fire engine skidded on ice and crashed. The damage deemed the bridge unsafe. A new concrete bridge replaced it in the early 1960s. The old iron bridge came down in 1964/65. By the late 1960s, Hörde’s city center transformed into a pedestrian zone. Car traffic dwindled on the Hörder Brücke, then vanished altogether. Trams followed suit in the 1980s. A humorous incident occurred in 1987. The city planned to renovate the Hörder Brücke and adorn it with concrete flower boxes. The project halted abruptly. The bridge couldn’t bear the weight of the concrete decorations. The endeavor already cost 210,000 Deutschmarks. More recently, the area around the Hörder Brücke saw major redevelopment starting in 2011. The old train station vanished. A new station arose, along with a shopping center and parking decks. The Hörder Brücke itself got a facelift in 2013 costing 250,000 euros. Today’s Hörder Brücke boasts a sleek modern design with terraces, colored paving, and balconies. New elevators, stairs, and an iron walkway to the station enhance accessibility. The Hörder Brücke isn’t just a way to get from one side to the other. It’s a landmark. A stage for the annual Hörder Brückenfest. A meeting point between past and present. It stands as a symbol of Hörde’s resilience and its ongoing journey of transformation.
