“Built in 1943”. Those are the simple words that define the Hoppets kapell. This chapel stands within the beautiful Östra kyrkogården in Malmö. The cemetery’s design has gained fame far beyond Sweden’s borders.

The Hoppets kapell is also known as the Chapel of Hope. It is one of three chapels here. The others are Saint Gertrude and St. Knut’s.

Sigurd Lewerentz designed the Östra kyrkogården. From 1916 until his death in 1975, he helped develop the cemetery. Lewerentz won a contest to design the cemetery. He also designed related buildings such as the Hoppets kapell.

The Östra kyrkogården includes a chapel and crematorium. This facility also bears Lewerentz’s signature. The plant was built during the war years. It was inaugurated on October 23, 1943. That makes the Hoppets kapell over 80 years old.

Inside the chapels, you’ll find pleasing works of art. Artists like Sven Erixon, Otte Sköld, and Robert Nilsson created these works. The crematorium is no longer in use today.

The Hoppets kapell offers a quiet space for reflection. Its simple design embodies hope. It provides solace within the larger cemetery grounds. Lewerentz’s work attracts visitors from all over the world. They come to admire the architecture and peaceful atmosphere.

The chapel is a testament to Lewerentz’s vision. It showcases his dedication to creating meaningful spaces. The Hoppets kapell remains a significant landmark. It is a place where art, architecture, and hope converge.
