“Hope,” they named it. Hopewell Church stands here today. It has a rich history rooted in faith and community. This church has grown from humble beginnings to a beacon of spiritual guidance.

Hopewell Church dates back to 1865. Former slaves founded the church after the Civil War. Imagine their resilience, their unwavering belief in a better future as they gathered to worship. They sought solace and strength in their shared faith.

In 1980, Dr. William L. Sheals became the Senior Pastor of Hopewell Baptist Church. He came from a business background. He held degrees from New York University, Florida Memorial Seminary, and International Bible College. He also worked in the housing sector.

Under Pastor Sheals’ leadership, Hopewell experienced phenomenal growth. From a small rural church, it transformed into a suburban mega-church. The church expanded from two acres to a thirty-acre campus. This campus is known as “The City of Hope”.

“The City of Hope” now includes many ministries. There is a senior citizens facility. A youth church ministers to young people. A child development center nurtures children. Hopewell also boasts a Christian Academy. It teaches pre-school through eighth grade students. An accredited Bible College trains future leaders. The church grew from 200 members to nearly 17,000.

Bishop Sheals had a vision in 1990. He saw a junkyard transformed into a place where God is glorified. Construction began in 1992. It became the 2,500 seat sanctuary we see today.

Hopewell is more than just a church. It is a multifaceted community center. It offers programs for all ages and interests. The church has over 60 ministries and auxiliaries.

Dr. Sheals is also an effective teacher. He has trained 179 ministers. Thirty-one are now pastors of their congregations. He is well-respected nationally and internationally. In 2007, he was consecrated Bishop and Overseer for The Light House Ministries.

Bishop Sheals has written seven inspirational books. He has received numerous awards. He founded Ministers Against Drugs in 1989. He was also the founding president of the North Metro 100 Black Men in 1993. He received the Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major Award in 1999.

Bishop Sheals even ventured into filmmaking. He produced, wrote, and directed “Sunday Morning Rapture.” His goal was to win 100,000 souls for Christ through the movie.

Hopewell Church is still growing and evolving. It continues to serve its community. It offers live-streamed services and inspirational messages. The church embraces modern technology. It stays connected through social media.

The Health & Spiritual Wellness ministry educates and assists families. It promotes good health. Pastoral Care brings God’s presence to those in need. The Operations Center supports outreach leaders and missionaries.

Hopewell Church stands as a testament to faith. It is a beacon of hope. It reflects the vision of its founders and the leadership of Bishop Sheals. It is a place where people can come together. They can worship, learn, and serve. It is truly a City of Hope.
