Imagine a temple consumed by flames. It is engulfed in smoke and chaos. That was Honno-ji Temple. Today, we stand before the rebuilt Honno-ji. It is a serene reminder of a turbulent past.

Honno-ji Temple is a significant site. It is associated with Oda Nobunaga. Nobunaga was a key figure in Japan’s history. He aimed to unify the country.

The story of Honno-ji Temple is inseparable from Nobunaga. The original temple was founded in 1415. Buddhist Saint Nichiryu established it. It was initially named Hon’o-ji Temple. This temple is the head temple of the Hokke sect. This sect belongs to Nichiren Buddhism.

Why did Oda Nobunaga stay at Honno-ji Temple? Nobunaga sought to unify Japan with military force. It is said he stayed here to acquire firearms. Honno-ji Temple sent missionaries to Tanegashima Island around 1462. Many Hokke sect temples were built there. These temples helped Nobunaga obtain firearms. He saw firearms as a way to rule the country.

The Honno-ji Incident dramatically changed history. In 1582, Nobunaga ordered Toyotomi Hideyoshi to attack the Mori clan. Nobunaga stayed at Honno-ji Temple with few men. Akechi Mitsuhide was ordered to reinforce Hideyoshi. However, Mitsuhide betrayed Nobunaga.

On June 1st, Mitsuhide left Kameoka Castle. He had 10700 soldiers and nine flags. The flags displayed his light blue bellflower crest. That night, Mitsuhide declared his true target. He revealed that their enemy awaited at Honno-ji Temple.

The army attacked Honno-ji Temple at dawn. Nobunaga was surrounded by 10000 soldiers. He set fire to the main hall and committed suicide. The entire temple burned down. Nobunaga’s dream of unifying Japan vanished.

After the Honno-ji Incident, the temple was moved. In 1587, Toyotomi Hideyoshi relocated it. It was part of his city planning. The old site is about 1.2 kilometers southwest of here. Today, Horikawa High School and an elderly care facility mark the spot with a stone monument.

Honno-ji Temple’s history is filled with drama. The Honno-ji Incident is a major event. However, the rebuilt temple offers peace. It serves as a reminder of the past. It also demonstrates the resilience of faith. The temple is a unique destination. It blends history, culture, and spirituality.
