This isn’t just any stream. The Hongjecheon Stream flows right through the heart of Seoul. It begins its journey high up in the mountains. It starts at Sumunbong Peak Bohyeonbong Peak and Hyeongjebong Peak of Bukhansan Mountain. Imagine the crisp mountain air the rushing water carving its path downhill. Then it meanders its way through Seodaemun-gu before joining the mighty Hangang River. It’s over thirteen kilometers long a true ribbon of water winding through the city. Over six of those kilometers are within Seodaemun-gu alone.
Think of it a tranquil escape within the bustling city. Locals use its banks for exercise. You’ll see cyclists and people using the free exercise machines. There are even stepping stones to cross the water perfect for a refreshing stroll. Families enjoy picnics along its banks. The atmosphere is one of peace and rejuvenation.
But the Hongjecheon Stream is more than just a pretty place. South of Hongje station sits a wider section of the stream. Here you’ll find a remarkable sight. A twenty-five-meter-tall sixty-meter-wide artificial waterfall! It’s so well-designed many believe it’s natural. This is not your average urban waterway. And it gets even better. This area also boasts a musical fountain. In summer during the evening you’ll witness a spectacular water and light show. It’s like a miniature version of the famous Banpo Bridge fountain but all to itself. Rainbow-colored lights dance across the cascading water creating a magical atmosphere. Currently the show runs from 8 pm to 9 pm but the Seodaemun-gu government hopes to extend its hours soon.
