Tragedy struck Hongje-dong in the early morning hours of a Sunday in January 2003. A seemingly ordinary fire in a two-story residential house turned deadly. Six firefighters lost their lives. Hongje-dong became a scene of devastation and grief. The nine firefighters had bravely extinguished the blaze. They entered the old, decrepit building, hoping to rescue a missing resident. The building, built in 1971, suddenly collapsed. It trapped the firefighters beneath a three-meter-high pile of debris. Hongje-dong residents watched in horror as the Seoul Metropolitan Fire Department raced against time. They dispatched 200 firefighters and equipment. The rescue efforts were hampered by the narrow alleyways of Hongje-dong. Numerous parked cars blocked access to the site. Rescuers used forklifts and bar cutters. They painstakingly removed debris and severed iron rods. They worked tirelessly to reach their trapped comrades. Three injured firefighters were pulled from the rubble and taken to hospitals in critical condition. The six others perished. Hongje-dong mourned the loss of these brave individuals. The missing resident, later found safe, was the son of the homeowner. Police suspected he started the fire. The tragedy in Hongje-dong highlighted the dangers faced by firefighters. It also exposed the precarious living conditions in some older neighborhoods of Seoul. The story of Kim Chol-hong, one of the fallen firefighters, resonated deeply within Hongje-dong. He had volunteered to transfer to the smaller Hongje fire station. He needed the extra 400,000 won a month to pay for his mother’s hospital expenses after she suffered a stroke. Park Joon-woo, another victim, was scheduled to marry his fiancée just a week later. His final text message to her read, “I’ll always care for you.” Kim Ki-seok, another fallen firefighter, had joined the service in 1995 driven by a desire to “serve people.” His 4-year-old daughter, unable to grasp the concept of death, comforted her mother, saying, “Mom, don’t worry. Dad’s only gone to work.” The tragedy at Hongje-dong remains a somber reminder of the sacrifices made by firefighters. It’s a stark illustration of the unexpected turns that life can take in even the most ordinary of places.
