Did a gate ever inspire the public through virtue? Here at Honghwamun Gate, the main gate of Changgyeonggung Palace, the name itself means “promoting harmony,” which translates to “inspiring the public through virtue.” Honghwamun Gate has witnessed centuries of Seoul’s history. It was originally constructed in 1484, alongside the palace itself. This grand gate, facing east in a break from tradition, was more than just an entrance. It was a platform where kings interacted with their people. Imagine King Yeongjo in 1750, right here at Honghwamun, gathering public opinion before enacting the Equalized Tax Act. A few years later, in 1795, King Jeongjo used this very spot to distribute rice to the poor, celebrating Queen Mother Hyegyeonggung’s 60th birthday. This act of royal generosity is immortalized in the painting “Honghwamun Samido.” Sadly, Honghwamun Gate wasn’t immune to the ravages of time and conflict. It was destroyed during the Imjin War (1592–1598), a devastating Japanese invasion. But like a phoenix from the ashes, it was meticulously rebuilt in 1616. The gate we see today, with its three front gates and two side gates, reflects this 17th-century reconstruction. It stands as a testament to Korean resilience and a tangible link to the Joseon dynasty. Honghwamun Gate is a two-story marvel. It features an intricate locking mechanism and a distinctive hipped roof adorned with sculptures. Although it has undergone repairs and repainting over the years, it remains a valuable example of early 17th-century wooden architecture. Honghwamun Gate’s story continues to unfold. It stands as a proud symbol of Korea’s rich past and a vibrant gateway to its future.
