Gazing up at Honganji Temple Tsumura Betsuin, also known as Kita Mido, did you know this modern marvel sits on land steeped in history? Honganji Temple Tsumura Betsuin wasn’t always here. In fact, its predecessor, Ishiyama Hongan-ji Temple, stood where Osaka Castle now rises. That original temple played a pivotal role in shaping Osaka. It became a fortress for the Ikkō-ikki, warrior monks and commoners who resisted samurai rule. Imagine Osaka in the 16th century. Ishiyama Hongan-ji was a formidable stronghold, its strategic location at the mouth of the Yodo River making it almost impregnable. It even withstood a decade-long siege by Oda Nobunaga, the longest in Japanese history. Honganji Temple Tsumura Betsuin carries echoes of that turbulent past. This temple, of the Jōdoshin-shū Hongan-ji sect, the largest Buddhist sect in Japan, arrived at this location in 1597. The very street we’re standing on, Midosuji Street, takes its name from Kita Mido and its southern counterpart, Minami Mido. Kita Mido has witnessed pivotal moments in Osaka’s history. Emperor Meiji himself stayed here while deciding whether Osaka or Tokyo should become Japan’s capital. Even the first meeting of the Osaka Chamber of Commerce took place within these walls. The temple you see today, completed in 1964, is a testament to its resilience. It was completely destroyed in the Osaka Air Raid during World War II, yet rose again, a beacon of faith and history. Step inside and admire the splendor of its main hall. It’s a space open to all, regardless of religious affiliation. Honganji Temple Tsumura Betsuin stands as a symbol of Osaka’s enduring spirit, a vibrant thread in the rich tapestry of this city’s past and present.
