Have you ever felt the pulse of a city’s heart? Hong Ha in Ha Long is more than just a suburb it’s a vibrant neighborhood teeming with life. Imagine Hong Ha nestled between the bustling Hon Gai and the tourist haven of Bai Chay. This area is not just a geographical location. It’s a place where the rich history of Ha Long mingles with the modern energy of this coastal city.

Hong Ha boasts a fascinating past. Long before the city’s official establishment in 1993 Hong Ha was part of Hon Gai’s story. Hon Gai itself began as a small fishing village. The area was once known as Bai Hau or Oyster Coast. Later it was renamed Mau Le at the start of the Nguyen Dynasty. Then came French occupation in 1883. The French were primarily interested in coal mining in this part of Ha Long Bay. They named the area Hon Gai which loosely translates to “island of hemp”. This speaks to the abundance of hemp that once thrived here. Hon Gai later became the capital of the Hong Quang special district.

After the August Revolution in 1945 this area was crucial. It became the center of the large Hong Gai mine area. This is why Hong Ha carries the weight of this historical importance. The area’s strategic location near China made it a focal point. American forces frequently targeted it during the Vietnam War. The Bai Chay Ferry which connected this region to others was repeatedly destroyed. It was even awarded Hero of the People’s Armed Forces three times. These attacks speak to the critical role Hong Ha played in the region’s history. The ferry was eventually replaced by the Bai Chay Bridge which stands as a testament to resilience.

Today Hong Ha offers a glimpse into Ha Long’s past and present. The area reflects the city’s shift from coal mining to tourism. While Hon Gai focuses on industry and government buildings Hong Ha provides a more residential feel. Many residents live here and contribute to the area’s unique character. Imagine the sounds of everyday life shops opening markets bustling. The fragrance of local cuisine lingers in the air. There is a unique tranquility here despite the city’s overall dynamism. You can experience authentic Vietnamese life while being close to the iconic Ha Long Bay.
