Remembering Yolanda González. It is more than just reading words on this plaque. It is about confronting a painful chapter in Spain’s transition to democracy. This Homenaje a Yolanda González Plaque stands as a testament to a young life tragically cut short.

Yolanda González Martín was only 19 years old when she was murdered in February 1980. She was a student leader a worker and a militant in the Socialist Workers Party. The plaque honors her fight for democracy justice and workers’ rights. Fascist militants abducted her from her home in Aluche. They ended her young life in a brutal act of political violence.

The Homenaje a Yolanda González Plaque was inaugurated on November 18 2018 in the Latina district of Madrid. But just a week later vandals defaced it with a swastika. Someone wanted to erase her memory. Later a resident found the plaque in the trash. Locals replaced it with a temporary laminated one. But that too was destroyed.

Mar Noguerol shared an apartment with Yolanda. She remembers Yolanda as independent determined and idealistic. Yolanda became interested in politics at 16. She moved to Madrid for love and to start a new life. The apartment in Empalme became a place of terror.

Yolanda worked as a cleaner to fund her electronics studies. She spent much of her time in pro-democracy demonstrations. On February 1 1980 members of a criminal gang linked to New Force forced their way into her apartment. They were searching for evidence of ties to ETA but found nothing. Undeterred they kidnapped her. They shot her three times.

The crime gripped the country. The murderers’ escape to Paraguay added to the intrigue. Carlos Fonseca wrote a book about Yolanda’s murder. He struggles to understand the hatred that still exists towards her. Her crime was simply being a left-wing youth.

Despite the desecration of the original Homenaje a Yolanda González Plaque Carlos Sánchez Mato vowed to replace it. He affirmed that they would put it back up a thousand times if needed. The acts of vandalism only highlight the importance of remembering Yolanda’s story. It shows the ongoing struggle against fascism.

Even the temporary plaque was not safe. Vandals destroyed it. In response locals put up posters in her memory across the neighborhood. They want to deny us from remembering our victims said Noguerol. Josefa believes it was a coordinated act by a fascist group.

This Homenaje a Yolanda González Plaque represents more than just a name on a wall. It symbolizes the fight for a just society. It reminds us that the struggle for democracy is not always easy. It demands constant vigilance. May Yolanda’s memory inspire us to continue fighting for a better world. A world where justice and equality prevail.
