Who knew a simple truck could unearth history? Right here before us stands the Holzmarktbrunnen also known as the Oscar-Winter-Brunnen. This magnificent fountain boasts a fascinating history. It wasn’t always this way. In 1983 during renovations near the Leibnizhaus a truck unexpectedly sank into the ground. Beneath lay a previously unknown well meticulously crafted from hewn sandstone. Time constraints prevented full exploration. Today only paving stones mark its hidden location.

The current Holzmarktbrunnen however is a testament to a 100th anniversary celebration. In 1896 the Oscar Winter ironmongery company commissioned this masterpiece. Oscar Winter himself a shrewd businessman wanted to advertise his wares. He didn’t just want any fountain. He wanted a showstopper.

The project was a collaborative effort. Karl Gundelach sculpted the original blacksmith figure. Otto Luer designed the structure itself. G Wilhelm and W Lind crafted the copper basins. Conrad Geschwind added decorative touches. H W Wittenberg handled the smithwork. The original blacksmith depicted Oscar Winter. He held Mercury’s staff a symbol of trade. Unfortunately in 1941 this original statue was melted down for war materials. A tragedy.

Thankfully a small model survived. Karl Gundelach’s daughter preserved it. In 1954 Friedrich Adolf Sotebier recreated the blacksmith. The new version is notably younger and beardless. Friedrich Luddecke’s poem in the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung commemorated this new addition. A reminder of loss and resilience.

The Holzmarktbrunnen wasn’t without its trials. In 1899 a serious carriage accident damaged it severely. This led to renovations. A granite base was added along with two dog troughs. Elaborate wrought-iron gates were also installed in 1914. These protected the delicate copper basins.

Notice the seamless ring embedded in the 1914 ironwork. Legend says turning it grants wishes. A charming touch. The Holzmarktbrunnen isn’t just a fountain. It’s a microcosm of Hanover’s history. It tells a story of business acumen wartime loss and artistic revival. It’s a reminder that even beneath the surface of our everyday lives extraordinary history waits to be discovered.
