Gazing at Holy Trinity Parish Church, one might wonder how this distinctive building came to grace Donaghmede. Holy Trinity Parish Church stands as a testament to the community’s spirit. Its unique cruciform design, with four angled plates intersecting, creates a striking sculptural form. Designed by A&D Wejchert and completed in 1978, Holy Trinity Parish Church offers a bright, airy interior focused on the altar. Three arms of the cross embrace the congregation, while the fourth arm houses the sacristy, a Weekday Chapel, and parish offices. Originally, Holy Trinity Parish Church opened directly onto the surrounding park. Now, railings and gates enclose the church grounds. Despite some sensitive modifications, like adding timber partitions and realigning doors, the church’s dramatic atmosphere remains. Holy Trinity Parish Church wasn’t just built; it grew alongside the community. The story begins in the early 1970s as Donaghmede and Grangemore were developing. Residents lacked essential services, from shops and schools to a post office and a church. Young families faced economic hardship. Yet, amidst these challenges, the community rallied. Voluntary organizations, residents’ associations, and political parties emerged. Everyone worked tirelessly to establish necessary facilities. Children attended St. Benedict’s and used its church until Holy Trinity Parish Church was established in 1974. The area prospered with the opening of a shopping centre and local services. As families expanded, the need for local schools and a dedicated church grew. Fr. Dermot O’Mahony, appointed by Archbishop Dermot Ryan, dedicated the parish to the Holy Trinity. Mass was initially held in the hall of the new Holy Trinity School. The foundation stone for Holy Trinity Parish Church was laid by Archbishop Ryan in 1977. The church finally opened its doors in December 1978. Sadly, Fr. Joe Collins, the newly appointed Parish Priest, passed away just six months later. He didn’t witness the full impact of his efforts in building the parish and supporting the youth. The dedication of Fr. Collins Park serves as a fitting tribute to his legacy. Holy Trinity Parish Church has witnessed the community’s evolution, from its humble beginnings to its current vibrant state. It’s a story of resilience, dedication, and the power of community spirit, all embodied in the unique architecture of Holy Trinity Parish Church.
