Gazing up at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, can you sense the echoes of its humble beginnings? This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the faith and dedication of a community that blossomed in the shadow of a “soaring castle-like building” – Westminster College. Holy Trinity Catholic Church traces its roots back to a simple army barracks, purchased for a mere $6,000 in December 1948. Imagine, just a few months later, on Christmas Day, approximately 150 worshippers gathered for the first Mass. The official dedication by Archbishop Vehr followed on April 7, 1949.
The post-war boom saw Westminster’s population triple, and Holy Trinity Catholic Church grew along with it. By 1957, with 1,100 households, the parish needed a permanent pastor. Rev. Albert Puhl answered the call. He even used the Frank Huber home on Julian Street as a temporary rectory. The congregation continued to expand, overflowing into Westminster High School for Mass. The original four-acre plot was clearly too small. A new, larger site was purchased, and on September 7, 1958, groundbreaking began. Father Puhl, with foresight and inspiration, placed a small roadside shrine to Christ Crucified on the property. It served as a beacon of hope during construction. That very shrine still welcomes visitors to Holy Trinity Catholic Church today.
The new church building, costing $250,000, opened its doors on September 24, 1959. A rectory and convent followed a few years later. The growth continued with the establishment of Holy Trinity School in the fall of 1966. Four lay teachers and four Dominican nuns from Kansas brought education to children from preschool to eighth grade. Father Puhl shepherded his flock through the transformative era of Vatican II, introducing the English Mass in 1964. He retired in 1973, after 17 years of dedicated service, handing the reins to the Servite order.
The Servites led the parish until the summer of 2000, when Fr. John Hilton arrived. He introduced Eucharistic Adoration, sparking a wave of spiritual renewal. Holy Trinity Catholic Church expanded its reach by offering a Spanish Mass in 2002, now a cornerstone of the church’s ministry. A new playground was built in 2004, a testament to the church’s focus on community. The new Fr. Albert Puhl Parish Center opened in 2007, providing much-needed space. The Adoration Chapel underwent renovations in 2008, adorned with beautiful icons of St. Michael and St. Gabriel. In 2009, Holy Trinity Catholic Church marked its 50th anniversary with a major church renovation, completed in 2010. This transformation included expanding the worship space, adding natural light, and creating a more comfortable and inspiring environment for all who entered.
