From a former public library to a symbol of Armenian faith, the Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church has quite a story to tell. The first Armenian Church in Boston, originally located on Shawmut Avenue, was purchased in 1921. This building served the Armenian community for 38 years. It was renovated to evoke the atmosphere of a traditional Armenian church, and consecrated on Armistice Day, 1923. The Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church eventually found its current home on Brattle Street in Cambridge. This move was spearheaded by Reverend Father Papken Maksoudian. He envisioned a church that was both more accessible to parishioners and built in the traditional Armenian architectural style. The consecration of the new Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church took place on September 17, 1961. This marked a new chapter in the history of the Armenian community in Greater Boston. Later, during Reverend Father Mampre Kouzouian’s tenure, the church underwent significant changes. The original colored-glass windows of the Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church were replaced. These new windows showcased stained-glass art inspired by ancient Armenian manuscripts. The vibrant hues depict biblical scenes and important moments in Armenian Church history. In remembrance of the Armenian Genocide, a Khachkar was commissioned and erected on the church plaza in 1995. This intricately carved stone cross serves as a poignant reminder, bearing the inscription “Lest We Forget…”. The Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church has also been graced by the visits of Catholicos of All Armenians, further solidifying its importance within the Armenian community. Today, the Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church continues to thrive under the leadership of subsequent pastors. It remains a testament to the resilience, faith, and cultural richness of the Armenian people in Boston.
