The Holy Temple of the Transfiguration of the Savior stands proudly in the heart of Plaka. Its story begins near the start of the 11th century. Imagine the bustling streets of that era. Skilled artisans worked diligently on this cross-in-church design. The dome originally rested on four sturdy columns. Three impressive semi-circular arches graced its eastern side.

Time marched on. The Holy Temple of the Transfiguration of the Savior saw its share of upheaval. The Greek Revolution caused damage. Substantial alterations occurred between 1847 and 1855. The Russian community of Athens took over. They expanded the building to suit their needs. Oblong areas were added to the north south and west. A spacious western area followed in 1908. The church transformed into a three-aisled basilica. More expansions and two bell towers came in 1917.

Despite these changes the original Byzantine core remains visible. Look closely at the eastern side and the dome. The simple cloisonné masonry speaks of its ancient origins. The octagonal dome an Athenian type. It boasts marble columns at its corners and elegant lobed windows. A fascinating detail is a Roman-era marble statue torso used in the dome’s construction. Two of the original columns are Roman. Two were replaced in 1950. Fragments of the originals remain in the courtyard. They showcase three Corinthian capitals and an inverted Attic base.

The interior holds post-Byzantine wall paintings. These date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The marble screen is a 20th-century addition. A 17th-century marble fountain stands in the small garden. Ancient architectural elements are scattered there. In February 2009 restoration uncovered a unique 11th-century jeweled cross.
