A small piece of paper tucked into a Bible. That’s how the story of Holy Tabernacle Church of God in Christ began. Here, at this very spot, stands a testament to faith and perseverance. Holy Tabernacle Church of God in Christ wasn’t built overnight. It was born from a vision, a call from God to Reverend Dextral D. Alexander back in 1972. He wrote the church’s name on that slip of paper, a tangible representation of his burgeoning faith. He then spent weeks on the beach, homeless, seeking guidance. Finally, he received his answer, a confirmation of his path. Holy Tabernacle Church of God in Christ was officially founded on May 13, 1977. Just over a week later, the first service was held at the Inglewood Women’s Club. They had a mere $46, the tithe of a single member. Yet, week after week, the church thrived, sustained by faith and prayer. Holy Tabernacle Church of God in Christ eventually found a permanent home in April 1981. The building, an old flower shop on West Boulevard in Inglewood, was in disrepair. The congregation rallied together, transforming the space into a place of worship. They even managed to pay off their 30-year mortgage in just 25 years. The church continued to grow, its membership expanding to over 450. In 2004, Holy Tabernacle Church of God in Christ merged with Revived Faith Baptist Church, led by the retiring Reverend Xavier T. Carter. This union brought new life and a new location. The current building on Florence Avenue, once the home of Revived Faith, became the new sanctuary for the combined congregation. Today, Holy Tabernacle Church of God in Christ stands as a beacon of hope. It continues its mission of service, guided by the motto “Serving God by Serving Mankind.” The church’s legacy lives on, a testament to the power of faith and the enduring spirit of community.
