Can you imagine a place where a chapel from a prestigious girls’ school stands proudly in the heart of Wavell Heights? This is the Church of the Holy Spirit. It’s a simple, yet beautiful building that is a testament to the enduring faith and community spirit of Nundah.
Designed by famous architect Robin Dods, the Church was built in 1904 as a chapel for the Eton High School for Girls. It later served St Francis Theological College before it was moved to Wavell Heights in 1936.
Archbishop William Wand officially dedicated the church on February 7, 1937. He is said to have suggested the name “Church of the Holy Spirit” because the students at the college already worshipped in a chapel named after the Holy Spirit.
Now, imagine a small porch welcoming you into the building. It’s a place that whispers quiet reverence. It’s a place where people have found solace and strength for over a century.
If you look closely, you’ll notice the timber walls and the high tin roof. This church is a symbol of resilience and community spirit. It stands as a reminder of the enduring faith that has shaped the history of Wavell Heights.
