Carved into the bronze plaque a testament to faith stands before you. This is the Holy Rosary Catholic Parish Plaque. It’s a marker for a remarkable Houston story. It commemorates more than a century of devotion.

The Holy Rosary Catholic Parish was founded in 1913. The Dominican Friars established it. They answered Bishop Nicholas A Gallagher’s call. He sought to serve 125 families in Houston’s then-south side. This was a time when Houston’s population was only 82000. The parish quickly outgrew its initial two-story building. That building was built on land donated by William H McCarthy. The lower floor served as the church. The upper floor housed a parochial elementary school. Dominican Sisters of the Congregation of the Sacred Heart ran the school.

The early years were filled with milestones. The first Mass was held in a private residence. The first baptism was Joseph I Macatee’s. The first funeral was for George Rick. The first wedding was that of Charles Giraud and Mary Kittrell. Early parish organizations formed. The Holy Name Society provided fellowship. The Blessed Virgin’s Sodality offered spiritual growth for young women. The Rosary and Altar Society further fostered community. The Rosarian Club provided a social outlet for young adults. A chapter of the Society of St Vincent de Paul served the needy.

In 1930 Father Martin McDermott took over. He initiated the construction of a permanent church. A parishioner Maurice J Sullivan designed the Gothic-style building. Sullivan was a respected architect. He also designed St Anne Catholic Church and St Mary’s Seminary. The construction cost $150000. This was exceptionally low due to the Depression. Parishioners contributed generously despite hardship. The new church was dedicated in 1933. It was built using Bedford stone on the exterior and Texas limestone inside.

The sanctuary’s beauty is captivating. The baldachin and reredos were recently restored. The large arch is a striking Gothic feature. The crucifix hangs within the baldachin. Gilded appointments add to the splendor. The baldachin’s ceiling features a Holy Spirit icon. This is reminiscent of Bernini’s baldachin in St Peter’s Basilica. St Thomas Aquinas and St Albert the Great are depicted on the reredos. Stained glass windows above depict St Dominic St Catherine of Sienna and Mary. The limestone altar has carved scenes. They depict the Annunciation Presentation Nativity Resurrection and Ascension. These details are designed for meditative reflection.

The Holy Rosary Parish Plaque thus marks more than a building. It represents a community’s enduring faith and resilience. It embodies the legacy of the Dominican Friars and generations of dedicated parishioners. This plaque is a tangible link to a vibrant history. It’s a story of faith family and the transformative power of community in Houston’s ever-evolving landscape. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Holy Rosary.
