A remarkable soldier diplomat and explorer Reginald Schomberg’s benefaction made Holy Rood Church possible. This Oxford church dedicated in 1961 stands near Folly Bridge. Its design reflects the Second Vatican Council’s vision of the Church as God’s people on a pilgrimage. The tent-like shape mirrors the Old Testament Tabernacle God’s dwelling place.

Holy Rood Church’s history is fascinating. It occupies land once part of Grandpont House’s orchard. This house belonged to the Salter family and now Opus Dei. Father John Crozier the then parish priest bought the site from Brasenose College. Memorials to Schomberg and Crozier grace the side chapel. A plaque honors Our Lady of Poland reflecting the Polish community’s contribution. Many suffered greatly during the war years.

Before Vatican II Father Crozier studied church design in Europe. He collaborated with Oxford architect Gilbert Flavel. Together they created this unique round tent-like building. It accommodates both traditional eastward-facing Mass and the later facing-the-people style. The dedication to the Holy Rood Holy Cross is reflected in the Jerusalem Cross design. This cross also tops the central lantern.

The church’s octagonal design is set within a Greek Cross. Ancillary spaces extend to the corners forming a rectangle. The Blessed Sacrament Chapel sits to one side. A glazed central entrance features cruciform glazing. This echoes the church’s dedication. Single-storey flat-roofed sections house other functions. The main worship space rises behind with central top lighting. A pitched broach roof clad in copper sheeting completes the design.

Holy Rood’s furnishings are exceptional. The granite altar inscribed DUX VITAE MORTUUS REGNAT VIVUS Life’s champion slain lives and reigns forever. A large circular corona hangs above. Metalwork including a bronze Pantocrator and Theotokos are by Michael Murray. The Blessed Sacrament Chapel features abstract stained glass by Charles Ware. Eric Gill’s Christ on the Tree of Life is above the altar. The church’s rich history and unique design make Holy Rood Church a truly special place in Oxford. It’s a testament to faith architectural innovation and the lasting impact of individuals like Schomberg and Crozier.
