Sixteen acres of tranquility. That’s Holy Name Cemetery. Nestled just outside of bustling New York City in Jersey City it’s a place of serene beauty. Holy Name Cemetery. A vast expanse of meticulously manicured grounds dotted with ornate monuments. It’s more than just a resting place. It’s a testament to faith family and the enduring legacy of those laid to rest within its hallowed space.

Holy Name Cemetery opened in 1866. It wasn’t always Holy Name. Initially it was known as the Hudson County Catholic Cemetery. It started small. A single plot cost just $10. A bargain by today’s standards. But this modest beginning quickly expanded to become the largest cemetery in Jersey City. Now it boasts over 267000 burial plots and mausoleums.

This sprawling cemetery isn’t just about numbers. It’s filled with history. Many notable figures are buried here. Several Jersey City mayors rest here. Think Frank Hague Mark Fagan John V Kenny and Thomas F X Smith. It’s also the final resting place of state senator Thomas Cowan. Even Congresswoman Mary Teresa Norton is buried at Holy Name. Even those who served in the Civil War and the Spanish-American War found their eternal resting place here.

The artistry is breathtaking. Many of the early statues and intricately carved monuments are the work of local artisans. They were skilled artists who found work creating these gorgeous memorials. Some of the artwork even has a unique New York City connection. It’s said some of the ornate elements from New York City building projects found their way here.

The cemetery continues to evolve. Facing land scarcity a granite mausoleum was built in 2005. It houses 1300 crypts providing space for new interments. A beautiful neoclassical mausoleum was added in 2010. It includes stained-glass windows salvaged from the old St Boniface Church. These windows add a piece of Jersey City’s history to this modern memorial structure.

Holy Name Cemetery isn’t just a place of quiet contemplation. It’s a vibrant part of Jersey City’s history. It’s a place where faith and artistry intertwine.
