On a crisp autumn day in 2019, the Holy Epiphany Russian Orthodox Church in Boston pulsated with music and life. Over seventy voices, some traveling from as far as Europe, converged within the church’s walls for the 28th Annual Russian Orthodox Church Musicians’ Conference. The Holy Epiphany Church, usually a sanctuary of prayer, transformed into a vibrant hub of musical exchange. This particular conference held a poignant significance. It was dedicated to the memory of Vladimir Pavlovich Roudenko, the longtime director of the Holy Epiphany parish choir. The theme, “Continuity and Growth: Ensuring the Future of Liturgical Chant in Our Parishes,” echoed through the halls.
For three days, lectures, masterclasses, and workshops filled the air. Dr. Peter Jermihov, the featured faculty member and choir director, led a cohort of experienced church choir directors, musicians, and scholars. The choir, now a powerful force under the direction of several conductors including Dr. Jermihov and A. Roudenko, filled the church with majestic song. The timing of the conference coincided with the Feast of the Conception of St. John the Baptist. This added a layer of special significance for the Holy Epiphany parish, which considers every feast of St. John the Forerunner a kind of parish feast. The joy and gratitude were palpable.
The final notes of the conference faded into the warm autumn air during a picnic-style banquet in the Holy Epiphany churchyard. The unseasonably warm weather mirrored the warm, familial atmosphere.
