In 1939 Beatrice Lehman Green sought a place to worship. She was a third-generation Lutheran. But when she and her aunt visited Trinity Lutheran Church, they were turned away. It was a time of segregation. Black individuals faced discrimination. They were often excluded.
But Lehman’s faith was unwavering. She and her aunt started their own church. This marked the beginning of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in 1940. It became the first African-American Lutheran Church in Texas. They built their first Holy Cross chapel from discarded lumber. This was on a plot of land they purchased in 1940. They also established a Lutheran day school. It ran from 1945 to 1956.
Holy Cross Lutheran became a beacon of hope. It stood as a symbol of inclusivity. Lehman met her husband, Allie C. Green, at Holy Cross. Together, they served the church for 60 years.
Beatrice Lehman Green passed away at the age of 108. Her funeral service was held at Trinity Lutheran Church. This was the same church that had once turned her away. The congregation was deeply humbled. They opened their doors to celebrate her life.
James A Baker III attended the service. He praised Green for opening doors. He noted the first closed door she encountered in Houston. Baker also acknowledged her work during the civil rights movement.
Green’s journey wasn’t easy. But her faith and determination paved the way. She helped open Precinct No 247. It was the first black voting precinct. She served as assistant precinct judge for over 60 years.
