Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Detroit, Holy Cross Lutheran Church stands as a beacon of faith. It has served the community for decades. Holy Cross Lutheran Church, located at 14213 Whitcomb Street, isn’t just a building. It is a living testament to the enduring power of faith and community. Holy Cross Lutheran Church has been more than just a place of worship. It has been a cornerstone of the community, offering support and guidance to those in need. Holy Cross Lutheran Church, with its deep roots in the community, has been a witness to the changing times. It has adapted and evolved to meet the needs of its congregation. The church’s history is a fascinating journey through time. In 1925, the Michigan District of the LCMS recognized the growth in the Grand River District. They decided to explore this new mission field. Rev. Walter E. Kutch was called to lead this mission. On November 25, 1925, ground was broken for a bungalow chapel. The congregation officially organized on March 28, 1926. This marked the beginning of Holy Cross Lutheran Church’s rich history. Construction continued, and on September 7, 1930, ground was broken for a new church building. The cornerstone was laid on October 12, 1930. The new church building was dedicated on February 1, 1931. A school was also established, expanding the church’s reach into the community. As the congregation grew, so did the need for a larger space. In 1949, ground was broken for yet another church building. This expansion reflected the church’s growing influence and commitment to serving its community. A new school building followed in 1957. It was dedicated in 1959. The church continued to thrive for many years. Sadly, the congregation closed on March 8, 2015. Holy Cross Lutheran Church’s legacy, however, lives on. It serves as a reminder of the power of faith, community, and service. The church’s records, meticulously kept from 1926 to 2015, provide a glimpse into the lives and events that shaped its history. They offer a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning more about the church and its impact on the community. From baptisms and confirmations to marriages and funerals, these records document the milestones of countless individuals and families. Holy Cross Lutheran Church may be gone, but its story continues to inspire. It’s a story of faith, dedication, and the enduring bonds of community.
