Did you know that Holy Cross High School in Hamilton has a fascinating history? It began life as St Mary’s Primary School in the 1930s. Imagine a small school on Muir Street. Its humble beginnings were far from the impressive institution you see before you today. The school grew. It expanded. Then in the 1950s St Mary’s became Holy Cross High School. The original St Mary’s building was retained. Prefabricated wooden structures were added. These housed art classes. The main building held the Rector’s office and staff rooms. It also housed the Classics English Maths and Physical Education departments.

Holy Cross High School wasn’t always where it stands now. The original site was far more modest. For many years the school thrived. Then in the early 1970s the old wooden buildings were demolished. They were replaced by newer prefabricated concrete and steel structures. This transformation shaped the school’s look for decades. The original 1930s building lasted until 2010. That’s when the Muir Street site was completely demolished. This was after Trinity High School temporarily occupied it. Trinity needed space while their new school was being built.

The move to its current location marked a significant chapter in Holy Cross High School’s history. In 2007 the school relocated to a new building on New Park Street. This was part of South Lanarkshire Council’s school modernization program. It’s a testament to the school’s commitment to providing a modern and enriching learning environment for its students. Today Holy Cross High School is a vibrant community. It boasts nearly 1200 pupils. It’s a far cry from its humble beginnings. The school continues to evolve. It continues to grow. It continues to nurture generations of students. Its motto is Spes Unica meaning Our only hope. This reflects the school’s dedication and its enduring spirit. It’s a place of learning a place of growth a place where hope thrives. So stand before Holy Cross High School. Reflect on its journey. Appreciate its legacy.
