“A beacon of faith for over a century” might describe Holy Cross Catholic Church in Henderson. Holy Cross Catholic Church has witnessed the ebb and flow of life in Henderson since 1911. The original church, a modest wooden structure, was erected on land generously donated by a local Catholic family. As the community expanded, so did the church. In 1924, the building was enlarged to accommodate the growing congregation. A priest would journey from Avondale to conduct Mass. Recognizing the need for Catholic education, parishioners rallied to establish a school. Their dedication bore fruit in 1932 with the opening of a school staffed by the Sisters of Mercy from Avondale. This original church-convent-school complex remained a vital part of the parish until the integration of Catholic schools. It continues to serve the community today. Holy Cross Catholic Church isn’t just a building; it’s a reflection of the diverse community it serves. The initial parishioners represented a mix of English, Irish, and Dalmatian heritage. Following World War II, a significant number of Dutch immigrants joined the parish. Over time, parishioners from various Pacific ethnicities, including Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji, have enriched the tapestry of Holy Cross. The vibrant Indian sub-continent community further adds to the church’s multicultural character. By the late 1950s, Henderson’s growth necessitated a larger church. The combined efforts of the priest and parishioners led to the construction and opening of the current church building in 1960. With some modifications, this structure continues to serve the parish today. In the early 1980s, the Parish Hall was added. The church’s artistic elements are noteworthy. Significant mosaics depicting the Stations of the Cross, a mosaic of Mary and Child in the entrance, and stained-glass images of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, created by renowned artist Milan Mrkusich, grace the interior. Stained glass windows and a metal crucifix crafted by Louise Henderson will be preserved in the planned redevelopment. This redevelopment will increase seating capacity and restore the traditional long aisle layout. Under the stewardship of the Capuchin Friars for nearly 30 years, Holy Cross Parish continues to welcome new members, adding to the legacy of those who first established a church on this site over a century ago.
