Founded in October 1890 Holy Cross Catholic Church stands proudly in Philadelphia. It began as a small parish carved from the territories of two other churches. The parish purchased a building from Grace Episcopal Church. This building along with an adjacent house served as the church and rectory. Over the next two decades more land was acquired to accommodate the growing community. A school and convent were constructed. The Sisters of Saint Joseph taught at the new school. The school opened in September 1910. The convent was completed in November 1912. A new rectory was added in 1922. The church expanded rapidly. Two new parishes were created from its eastern section in 1925. These were St Therese and St Madeleine Sophie. The need for a larger church was evident. Plans were made for years. A new church building was constructed between January 1928 and June 1929. This is the church we see today. In 2013 St Therese and St Madeleine Sophie were re-incorporated into Holy Cross. The church’s history is rich. It reflects the growth and change of its neighborhood. It showcases the devotion of its community. The open-air Masses during the 1918 flu pandemic is a touching testament. The renovation of the school and convent speaks to the church’s ongoing commitment to education. Holy Cross Catholic Church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith. It’s a vibrant part of the Mount Airy community. It stands as a symbol of perseverance and hope. It continues to serve its community with dedication. Take a moment to appreciate this landmark. Reflect on the generations it has served. Let the history of Holy Cross Catholic Church inspire you.
