Have you heard about the church that started in a trailer? Holy Comforter Lutheran Church, the first church in Kingwood, has a fascinating history. In 1966, Reverend V. George Brookover, a recent graduate of Texas Lutheran University, felt a calling. He was tasked with establishing the first Lutheran Church in northern Harris County. The plan was to find land near Humble, but fate had other plans. The opening of George Bush Intercontinental Airport faced delays, shifting the area’s growth and leaving the congregation without a permanent home. Holy Comforter Lutheran Church wouldn’t have a permanent address for several years. They persisted, holding services in a trailer-chapel shared with an Episcopal church. Finally, in 1972, they broke ground on their own building on Woodland Hills Drive. That Christmas Eve, the congregation celebrated their first service in their very own church, a beacon of faith for the growing community. This was just the beginning. Holy Comforter Lutheran Church quickly became a cornerstone, offering the first pre-school and Mother’s-Day-Out programs. They expanded their ministry, adding a second building for their growing congregation. Holy Comforter Lutheran Church’s legacy continued to blossom, marked by expansions and the arrival of new pastors. But the core remained the same: a dedication to faith, service, and community. The church became known for its strong ties to Texas Lutheran University, fostering a bond that has lasted decades. Holy Comforter Lutheran Church’s journey is a testament to unwavering faith. They transformed challenges into opportunities, leaving a lasting impact on Kingwood and beyond.
